The Dream series began with a chair of unreal form encountered in a dream.
In reality, we see an object from one viewpoint at a time. The chair in the dream, however, held views from different directions layered within a single form. It was a sight that could not exist within the way we perceive reality, and it left a strange sensation that cannot be felt while awake.
The artist read the unreal impression of the chair as coming from multiple viewpoints in three dimensions. Multi-perspective painting places surfaces seen from several viewpoints side by side on one picture plane, but a three-dimensional object cannot be divided into surfaces and reassembled. The artist therefore took the solid, rather than the surface, as the basic unit that holds a viewpoint in three dimensions.
The Dream series abstracts objects into the cuboid, the most basic solid, and gives each part a different viewpoint. Given a viewpoint, a cuboid becomes a solid that narrows with perspective. When these solids, each holding its own viewpoint, are joined into one object, a form arises in which many viewpoints coexist, like the chair seen in the dream.
The Dream series unfolds familiar furniture and lighting through multiple viewpoints in three dimensions. When we meet a strange sensation in objects we use every day, we come to see the familiar in a new way. Through this, the artist seeks to question the standards by which we perceive space and form.
〈Dream series〉
〈Dream series〉
〈Dream series〉
